Studying Maverick

It's an exciting time for birds in the studio. One , Maverick, a special injured Bald Eagle at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher https://www.ncaquariums.com/habitats-ff , has been the subject of several sculptures. I visited him several times this winter when he came of quarantine to prevent getting the bird flu. The first two were made in wet clay and fired. I have a double life-sized head seen on the Animals page of this site, and am still finishing a near life-sized full body of him on an abstract perch. This second one just came out of the kiln and will be glazed with a wash and light glaze to accent the details. I am currently working on my third sculpture of him which will be created in oil-based clay before it is molded and cast in resin. This one is just getting started but I'm trying to capture him a full wing spread as he hopes to get off the ground. While this is a little sad for him from my perspective, it is also a strong message to keep hoping and keep fighting for that hope. I'll share more on him as I progress.

All sculptures are for sale and please send me an inquiry at info@robddesign.com to find out more about them, a commission or other sculptures.
